Introducing the 2026–2027 TXNAWGJ Mentors

A new support system for judges across Texas

TXNAWGJ is proud to introduce the inaugural class of mentors for the 2026–2027 Mentorship Program, a new initiative designed to strengthen support, connection, and professional growth for judges at every stage of their journey. While this program is especially valuable for new judges, every member of our community can benefit from the experience, guidance, and encouragement these mentors bring.

This season is already busy with testing underway, and we are deeply grateful to the mentors who have volunteered their time to help guide the next generation of Texas judges. Their willingness to share knowledge and experience reflects the best of our organization.

A Personal Connection for New Judges

Beginning in July, TXNAWGJ will share mentor contact information with new judges in their local areas. Whenever possible, mentors will be matched based on geographic proximity so new judges have a friendly, familiar face to connect with during the season.

The goal is simple: to create a supportive, approachable network that helps new judges feel confident reaching out for assistance as they learn, grow, and navigate their judging journey.

Whether a new judge needs help understanding their next steps, preparing for testing, or simply wants reassurance before their first meet, mentors will be available to offer guidance and encouragement.

How Mentors Support the Judging Community

Mentors are not expected to be experts in every area — instead, they serve as trusted guides, helping judges understand where they are on their path and what comes next. When a new judge reaches out, mentors may help them explore questions such as:

  • How do I prepare effectively for testing?
  • What happens after I pass? What if I don’t pass?
  • How do I practice judging on my own or with others?
  • What should I expect at real meets?
  • What does professionalism and meet etiquette look like?

Every judge’s journey is unique. Some may need specific help, while others simply need general direction or reassurance. Mentors provide steady support tailored to each individual’s needs.

For additional resources, judges can also reach out to Bonnie Crawford, TXNAWGJ SJD, Shey Willcoxon, Recruitment & Retention Coordinator, or visit NAWGJ and USA Gymnastics online.
